<b><span style="font-size: medium;">Dear Dr.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="il">P.</span></span>,</b><br />
<br />
I need your help to model the behavior of a toy gyro as a Van Der Pol-like limit cycle. Even in this nascent form, I believe the model is applicable to the gyroscope. I believe we might be able to write a paper together, outlining a new understanding of gyro behavior. Please hear me out:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Video Link</b></span><br />
You can see the video somebody put up, of a simple toy gyro being spun up, released and allowed to slowly spin down to rest, at this link<a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&q=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v%3DX1eDLSEMMyI&source=gmail&ust=1474412645439000&usg=AFQjCNG57mhKjFAzDx_y2TtJ3vftHmPeBQ" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1eDLSEMMyI" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?<wbr></wbr>v=X1eDLSEMMyI</a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Description of Behavior</b></span><br />
For the sake of simplicity, I will call the spin axis of the gyro, its z-axis. Further, lets call the most acute angle the Z-axis forms with the ground to be z1 and the angle the gyro axis forms with the ground when it is mostly upright to be z2 (which is almost 90 degrees during the part of its play when the spin velocity is large).</div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">Start Up Behavior:</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br />
In the video, initially the gyro is spun up and placed at a very acute angle with respect to the ground [Time Index in Video: 0 minutes 5 seconds to 0 minutes 30 seconds]. The bottom point of the gyro axis executes increasingly smaller ellipses/circles on the ground, and as the curves tighten, the gyro becomes more upright.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Slow-Down Behavior:</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br />
Conversely, when a gyro starts to slow down [Time Index in Video: 1 minute 9 seconds to 1 minute 21 seconds], its spin axis which was previously stable, erect and perpendicular to the xy-plane, starts to teeter. Simultaneously, the top point of its z-axis starts to execute increasingly larger ellipses/circles on the x-y plane, as the gyro starts to slow down. <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Theoretical Proposition</b></span><br />
<br />
What if we consider a toy gyroscope's angle to the earth to be the dynamic variable being modeled by the Van de Pol equation?<br />
<br />
This angle is important because it determines the amplitude of the torque being applied to it, with<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><br />
<br />
i) the torque being maximum if the angle is close to zero, provided the frame of the gyro or the wheel doesn't hit the ground)<br />
ii) the torque being minimum if the angle is close to 90, because the weight vector of the gyro is then passsing through its axis, causing the torque due to gravity to be nearly zero.<br />
<br />
We can conclude that, if the Van der Pol eqn. were applicable, due to its non-conservative nature and nonlinear damping:<br />
<br />
a) When the angle is small the damping is negative, i.e. energy is generated.<br />
<br />
b) When the angle is large, the damping is positive, i.e. energy is dissipated.<br />
<br />
That is exactly what I observe with the toy gyro. Please allow me to explain.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Start-Up Behavior:</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br />
1) When the gyro is released at a very acute angle to the ground, it 'self-rights', itself; That represents an increase in potential energy, as it means the center of mass of the gyro has risen from rSin(z1) to r.<br />
Its potential energy has increased by mg[r- rsin(z1)]<br />
, where r is the length from the bottom of the gyro axis, which is on the ground, to the center of the wheel, where the center of mass of the gyro lies.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Slow-Down Behavior:</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br />
2) Part (i): when the gyro is upright, it is constantly losing energy, which is usually explained away as due to bearing friction. But the truth I believe is that no matter if we had magnetic bearings, the energy loss would continue, because its determined not only by any friction losses but also dominantly by the positive damping associated with the large amplitude of the angle of its spin axis with respect to the ground.<br />
<br />
Part (ii) Further, you can note that, when the gyro has really slowed down, it loses its ability to stay straight, and yet, as it starts to teeter, and the angle again falls, instead of falling straight to the ground, there is a small period of time, when it traces these increasing ellipses. i.e., there is an interplay betweeen energy dissipation and energy generation, and it tries to keep up a dynamic stability game that it eventually loses and only then can it come down.<br />
<br />
Part (iii) Lastly, I would like to say that from my experience playing with toy gyros (which is a lot, actually haha! True that!) at those ending moments, when the gyro is spinning slowly and its axis is playing this plosing game between positive and negative damping, the spin of the gyro is so slow, that if I were to actually take a non-spinning gyro and invest it with that exact rate of spin, I would observe no precessive effect whatsoever. The thing would fall to the ground, like a stone.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">

I am beginning the next design cycle. Here is the design as it evolves. The concept has already been demonstrated in the previous set of experiments. This round is conceptually superfluous, but I hope of interest to investors seeking to fully grasp at least a minimal application of the technology proven in the last round.<br />
<br />
In view of the fact that this round is aimed at investors, I will keep the technical descriptions brief and instead speak to the business investment opportunity offered. Given that the applications are myriad, I would like to emphasize that potential investors should focus less on the IP rights and more upon the sectors they are interested in.<br />

Dear Friend,<br />
<br />
As Gabriel Kron wrote in his work on Generalized Machine Theory, there are similarities between the ElectroMagnetic(EM)/Mech. and other sciences and these similarities are not a coincidence nor do they mean that the concepts are fundamental to these sciences. In fact there are concepts that appear in all the sciences and are fundemental to all aspects of matter and fields of all sorts. One such concept is the idea of organizing any functioning system into inductive, capacitive and resistive elements. (For more on this, I refer you to my blog post: http://relmachine.blogspot.com/2011/02/would-kron-recognize-in-concepts-behind.html)<br />
<br />
While the idea of an inductor may have been most clearly defined in EM systems, I propose that it is a fundamental property of Spacetime (as Einstein defined it). I propose that the gyroscope is an inductor-like device, with an impedance too. It can be shown that according to Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, an object travelling at near-light-speeds traverses a shorter path in Spacetime than one at rest. I propose that in fact Mother Nature is the Ultimate Karma accountant and so even for speeds not approaching light speed this theory is true. I propose that a spinning wheel is the most elegant proof of this. The rim of the wheel has a larger linear speed than the center (which, technically is a singularity with zero linear speed) and that difference operates by Relativistic principles to produce a phase-difference in the energy distribution across the spinning wheel, and that is the source of the gyroscope's peculiar behavior. I further propose that Magnetism and all inductive phenomena have their roots in this specific theory. (For proof of the relativistic path difference between objects travelling at different speeds and more information on my thoughts on the subject you can refer to my blog post:<br />
http://relmachine.blogspot.com/2009/05/spin-angular-momentum-and-worldlines.html<br />
and also<br />
http://relmachine.blogspot.com/2011/09/on-gravitomagnetism-and-compound.html)<br />
<br />
Professor P. and I propose that the exact behavior of the gyroscope can be modeled as a nonlinear oscillator of the Van Der Pol type, while the fundamental modes can be analysed using linear state space techniques. We propose that the gyroscope really has two modes of oscillation only one of which is being exploited commercially today. <br />
(For proof on the analysis of the modes of oscillation of a gyroscope, please refer to my blog posts: http://relmachine.blogspot.com/2015/04/analysis-of-analogous-networks-page-1.html<br />
and also<br />

I propose that the second mode is harder to invoke, but when activated, it is equivalent to the second mode of the electrical inductor, which is invoked when the inductor is coupled to a capacitor and resonated with a forcing function of the appropriate frequency. (Please note that although traditionally, Electrical engineers do not see the inductor as having two modes, I propose that its behavior w.r.t. DC current is a manifestation of its first mode and its behavior w.r.t. to an AC current is its second mode.<br />
<br />
I propose that when commercially developed, the gyroscopic oscillator (G.O.) is capable of producing motion of a hitherto unseen kind - Large velocities without acceleration (i.e. inertial motion, unlike today's conventional wisdom which holds that an engine that produces velocity will concommitantly produce acceleration). This new kind of G.O. engine also has other peculiar properties dervied by analogy to EM inductors, such as ability to minimize friction, ability to behave in ways that violate Newton's Laws but obey the Lorentz Transform (i.e that it is Relativistic). Such engines which have much higher energy efficiency and also the ability to avoid collisions through precessive reaction to all collision-causing encounters.<br />
<br />
Here is the summary of my proof:<br />
<br />
1. Picture & Initial Video: You might want to first take a clear look at the picture of the basic prototype I am testing now. It is imaginatively titled "prototype august 2015".<br />
<br />
First example: showing you that for a 'DC' torque, i.e. a torque that is not varying in its direction or amplitude, a smooth precession is produced.<br />
<br />
2. "Sinusoidal Torque Right Frequency" video: Here I apply several sets of 6 cycles of torques each. The torque waves are analogous to AC current in that they vary sinusoidally, increasing from 0 to a maximum to zero and then reversing their direction for the rest of the cycle. This happens 6 times per cycle.<br />
<br />
I can tell you that the friction on the lazy susan at the base of the rims has variable friction (what with me being a very delicate operator and all, and having bent it a bit over the months), so there is variable damping which muddles the picture....<br />
<br />
But watch the video: It is 20 seconds of beauty - The beast is caught at the smoothest portion of the lazy susan, with even damping, and you can see that the gyro executes continuous circles! I can also tell you that continuous circles are only possible for this specific time period of the torques and will happen for any maximum amplitude torque at this specific frequency (within reasonable limites).<br />
<br />
3. "Sinusoidal Torque - Wrong Frequency" video: Any other frequency of the torque will fail to consistently produce full circles and will instead produce behavior similar to that shown in this video. I can prove to you that the power input to the gyro is the exact same as that of the previous video. The gyro just doesn't like the frequency. That is exactly how an inductor behaves - Right frequency - Open Sesame! Wrong frequency - Sorry, Wrong Answer.<br />
<br />
I challenge anyone to prove me wrong by building a model that can produce smooth rotations of the gyro under arbitrary-frequency "AC torque" conditions! It is not possible! For DC torque, yes, you can produce smooth rotations of any frequency by adjusting the magnitude of the torque. But NOT AC torque.<br />
<br />
I have found other peculiar things about gyroscopic behavior all of which are documented on my blog (http://relmachine.blogspot.com), but this has probably already taken too much of your time.<br />
<br />
Thank You<br />
Ravi<br />

OK! Posting after a really long time, to share new designs. The new design will set the gyro free in 3-Dimensions and the gyro will hold its position with respect to the distant stars (when the wheel is spinning at a steady speed). <br />
<br />
Further Steps:<br />
1. This captive bank of angular momentum will be tested using programmable servo drives along 2 of the axis to see how it reacts to energy inputs through the drives,<br />
2. What happens if a small spinning toy gyro (in an appropriate suspension) were to be brought near it?Would the small gyro coordinate its spin axis orientation with the larger? What we should probably find, going by the book, is that nothing happens. We should probably find that the two do their own thing. (Unless the wind from the big one blows the little one over, perhaps! Right?) But on the other hand, if there is some kind of an inductive relationship between them, we would expect the large gyro to try to orient the small one, once it comes with in range of its field of influence. We will FIND OUT ...ONCE... the model is complete!<br />

In this video,<br />
1) The wheel motors are engaged at 00:04 seconds.<br />
2) 47 seconds into the video, the right subassembly is engaged.<br />
3) 1 minute 10 seconds into the video, the (central) cage motor is engaged.<br />
01:10-01:30 Cage Motor Torque = 1 A<br />
01:30-01:50 Cage Motor Torque = 0 A<br />
01:50-02:10 Cage Motor Torque = 2 A<br />
02:10-02:30 Cage Motor Torque = 0 A<br />
02:30-02:50 Cage Motor Torque = 3 A<br />
Conclusions:<br />
Having only one subassembly on, between 00:47 & 01:10, caused the entire cage to oscillate back and forth, depending on whether the rotating subassembly was ascending on descending.<br />
After 01:10, the cage motor attempts to raise the non-rotating subassembly. Whenever the rotating subassembly's assymettric weight is above horizontal (i.e. for 180 degrees of its rotation), however, the rotating subassembly is able to somehow arrest the acceleration of the cage and prevent the rise of the non-rotating subassembly.<br />
That is to say the rotating subassembly is somehow able to siphon the energy of the cage and transfers it to the outer frame of the machine, making it bounce about on the floor with the kinetic energy thus acquired. <br />
At first, I could find no explanation based on existing physics for why or how the rotating subassembly is able to stop the cage during 180 degrees of its (the subassembly's) selfrotation. In order for the rotating subassembly to affect the cage rotation, it must be able to push against something else, according to action-reaction principles. But since the spinning subassembly is completely embedded in the superstructure of the machine, there is nothing else available for it push against. So how is the rotating subassembly able to resist the torque of the central cage motor?<br />
Interestingly, if the other subassembly were also rotating, as we saw from experiments 10.9 and 10.10, the cage would not pause at all.<br />
The natural explanation is that the rotating subassembly is pushing against the earth, through the medium of the cage pressing on the outer frame of the machine, and the entire machine pressing down on the earth strongly. Not only that, but that the spinning wheel is then using the resistance of the earth as an input torque that cause the spinning wheel to gyroscopically precess the entire cage about the vertical axis, causing the entire frame to move about on the floor!<br />
<br />
The machine sustained some deformation during this experiment, whose examination proved very interesting. That's coming up next.</div>

<i>(I have been invited to present these findings at the annual ASME conference in San Diego in November of this year.)</i><br />
<br />
The behavior of a single spinning wheel in gimbals is a well-documented subject; however, the interaction between multiple spinning wheels is less fully explored. Some researchers have hypothesized that spinning wheels could be mathematically modeled after electrical inductors, suggesting that the interaction between multiple spinning wheels might mirror that of multiple inductors in proximity with each other. The goal of the current set of experiments was to examine the interaction between two gimbaled spinning wheels with six degrees of freedom embedded in one scaffolding and observe their behavioral similarity to electrical inductors. <br />
<br />
Two aluminum spinning wheels (1 in. thick and 1 ft. diameter) were secured in two sets of gimbals each. These subassemblies were supported in a light-weight, stand-alone aluminum scaffolding that allowed rolling, rotation and translation. The spinning wheels rotated at 5000 rpm. The first set of gimbals was driven by high-torque motors and the second set of gimbals was driven by a motor with a high-torque gear box and a programmable servo drive. Multiple sets of experiments were run to apply torques of various profiles, from straight to sinusoidal at different maximum currents and speeds. Video and electrical data were recorded for analysis.<br />
<br />
The spinning wheels showed behaviors such as large inertia amplification about the main shaft and subassembly shafts, coupling with each other so that the behavior of one spinning wheel is dependent on the behavior of the other and the ability to steer the scaffolding. Mathematically, these behaviors are similar to those of electrical inductors, and such an analogy between inductors and offset, gimbaled spinning wheels finds support in Generalized Machine Theory.<br />
<br />
Generalized Machine Theory opines that only a “few ultimate types of elements…form the building blocks of the great variety of engineering structure” (Kron, Tensors for Circuits, Second Edition, 1969, Page xxiii) and classes inductors among those building blocks: however, at present there exist no mechanical devices that are analogues of the electrical inductor. Spinning wheels in the offset, gimbaled suspension of the prototype tested are great candidates for such devices. The experimental results indicate that it might be possible to build new machines that use powered spinning wheels at their heart, with designs analogous to electrical machines, capacitor-inductor oscillators, transformers, and so on.<br />

<b><u>Legend:</u></b><br />
<div>
1. The current graph of the wheel subassembly with the black tape is represented by the orange graph and the corresponding position of its assymetric weight (i.e. the black motor powering the wheel itself) is represented by the blue square. For convenience, I have only plotted the position of the black motor when its only in 3 orientations - up, horizontal or down. </div>
<div>
<br />
So take the graph for segment 1 of the video for instance. You will observe that at time index 0.4, there is a blue square up at the top. That means at time index 0.4, the black motor that drives the wheel with the black tape was pointing upward. You will also note that time index 0.4, the orange curve reads ~0.25 Amperes. That means at the time the subassembly motor was pulling 025 Amperes from the power supply.<br />
<br />
You will also note that at the same time index, the other wheel subassembly (the one with the redtape) is also in roughly the same position. You can tell this from the segment 1 graph, because at time index 0.4, the green triangle representing the position of the redtaped wheel subassembly is at the top, and the yellow line representing its current consumption is around 0.4 Amperes.<br />
<br />
When the blue square and/or the green triangle are in the bottom position (on the X-axis), it means the corresponding assymetric weight of that subassembly is pointing downward. When the are in the middle, they are pointing horizontally.<br />
<br />
2. Further, in the graph of segment three, you see brown dots at the top of the graph, that indicates that at those time periods, the entire frame was experiencing pivoting or lifting about one of its edges.<br />
<br />
In this fashion we are able to understand the inner dynamics of the behavior exhibited by the machine.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Noteworthy Trends:</u></b><br />
<br />
A) Of the many very interesting things shown by the graphs, perhaps the most interesting is that during segment 3, it seems the wheel subassemblies experience gravitation opposite to what the previous segments experience.<br />
<br />
We can deduce this because we can see from the segment 1 and segment 2 graphs that the subassembly motors draw the most current when they are lifting the assymetric weight of the black motors driving the wheels (we'll call them wheel-motors from now on) against gravity, and ponting them up. Correspondingly, it seems that the subassembly motors draw little or no current, when that assymetric weight of the wheel-motors falls in gravity from the top to the bottom, aiding the rotation of the subassembly.<br />
<br />
You will note, however, that in the graph for Segment 3, the situation is reversed! The subassemblies draw little or no current when the wheel-motors are being lifted to the top. Further, when the subassembly is falling, the subassembly motors seems to need a lot of current to make the wheel-motors 'fall'.<br />
<br />
Could it be that in the active phase, 'up' is 'down' and 'down' is 'up' from the perspective of the spinning wheels?<br />
<br />
B) You will note that in the beginning of Segment 2, when the power is switched on, the wheels fight against each other (both drawing high current) till they find a way to orient their spins away from each other. Thereon, they are happy to maintain a constant rotation and draw low currents, keeping their spins opposed to each other, minimizing the net spin exhibited by the machine as a whole. (Following the path of least action it seems - it would rather the wheel- subassemblies spin internal to the machine than the entire machine roll around.) This seems to be a property of the spin, as physically there is no reason they couldn't rotate in phase. Segment 1 in fact shows very ably that we can physically rotate them in phase when there is no significant spin momentum.<br />
<br />
C) During Segment 3, the rules are changed again! The wheels are no longer content to be pointing in opposite directions. Now they want to be at 90 degrees to each other!<br />
<br />
And you will notice that the most 'lift' is obtained when they are holding that 90 degree configuration for longer - and the corresponding current graphs keep at high values (indicating high torque and high power consumption).<br />
<br />
D) Finally, you will also note that in Segment 1, the currents average no more than 0.4 Amperes while in Segment 2, the current drawn has gone up to about 1-2 Amperes, only because we have added a single additional parameter - spin of the wheels.<br />
<br />
Further, by the time we get to Segment 3, the currents drawn by the wheel subassemblies have spiked to 5 Amperes simply because we chose to rotate the cage as well.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let us start by asking a few questions about experiment 10.3. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Question A) When the two black motors driving the spinning of the wheels are both pointing in the same direction (i.e. up or down or to the left or right etc), the spin momentum of the two wheels 'line up' i.e. they reinforce each other so that the net spin of the entire unit is twice the spin momentum of a single wheel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the two black motors are pointing in opposite direction, (i.e., one points up and another points down or one points right and the other point left etc), then the net spin of the entire unit is zero (or nearly so).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So the question is:During the crucial phase of the experiment (i.e. when all the motors are active), why do the motors line up i.e. reinforce each others spin, giving a large net spin, only when they are horizontal?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Further the spins always arrange themselves so they cancel each other (point in opposite directions) when the motors are vertical?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We see that it is possible for them to choose any number of other configurations, for example:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1) They could always line up and reinforce each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2) They could always orient themselves so they cancel each other out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3) They could always orient themselves so they are at 90 degrees to each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4) They could always orient themselves so they are 1 degree off from each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5) They could always orient themselves so they are 2 degrees off from each other.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
etc etc</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You get the point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This question drove me crazy for 2-3 weeks. I repeated the experiment several times to cofirm that this is a pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The answer to this question must have to do with gravity. The black motors driving the wheels apply a torque upon the spinning wheels because they try to fall down vertically, in the earth's gravitational field (like everthing else on earth). The horizontal position gives the most gravitational torque upon the spinning wheels due to the fact that it has the longest torque arm (and torque = force X torque arm). Thus it seems that gyroscopes seek out the maximum torque position, rather than try to avoid torque. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thats interesting!!! You might think that the arrangement might try to minimize its interactions however it seems it is maximizing its interactions with external forces. Its like the machine is actively seeking out the maximum force configuration!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Question B) The next question is a little more subtle. To understand it easily, I would suggest that we first review one of Eric Laithwaite's experiments - the experiment on the model Eiffel tower. You can observe this experiment by going to this website and downloading and watching experiment 4 in the list. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-TOePv0Rig</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The relevant portion of the experiment comes somewhat towards the end of the video, from time index 7 mins 10 seconds onwards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, if you've watched the professor's experiment, you know that on the Eiffel tower for example that when a precessing gyro is pushed in the direction of its precession, it rises. Whereas, if its pushed in the opposite direction, it gives way.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In our experiment 10.3 too we see that the entire frame lifts about an edge when the Y-motor pushes along the direction of the precession and the spins line up in the H-plane.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That tallies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The same Laithwaite's experiment also showed that trying to resist the precession of the gyro caused the gyros to give way.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we'd expect that engaging the main motor in the OPPOSITE direction to the one in 10.3 would cause the gyros to give up lifting when they are in the horizontal plane.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The interesting question might be:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Will the spins then orient so they cancel and the whole cage speed up? or will they continue to line up, just not lift, simply speed up the cage rotation and/or speed up/relieve the load on the sub-assembly rotation?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If the spins orient so they cancel in the horizontal plane, then might we expect that the spins will line up when they are vertical? In which case, since there can be no precession when the imposed rotation is in the same plane as the spin of the wheels, we might expect a continuous speeding up fo the entire cage in a flash??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the other hand, if the spins still line up in the H-plane, then we might expect that the wheels exprience a tilt up both in the clockwise and cc directions about the horizontal axis, which might lead to a lift???</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So to test this out, I performed another experiment, we can call it experiment 10.4. This experiment is essentially identical to experiment 10.3 except that in this experiment, the main motor that is on top rotates in the OPPOSITE direction to experiment 10.3 </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(well, the other difference is that I increased the rate of rotation of the subassemblies to 1.5 seconds per revolution, instead of 3 seconds per revolution. I also synchronized the time period of the sinusoidal torque pulses applied on the cage to a 1.5 second waves. The experiment is therefore twice as fast as experiment 1.3, so it also lasts only half as long.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the sequence of events for experiment 10.4:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time Index 8 seconds: The wheel motors are started</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time Index 58 seconds: The subassembly motors are started</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time Index 1 minute 50 seconds: The main motor is started</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyQnkLLiYHJLMYRU6BvIktCUSgdmeQBejEvxj-6_Bt34JVajr5rPU3uoflIo7byJHKFIoIccpriSjSu2SgBcw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
The results were also interesting, and different from the two scenarios I was wondering about. The wheels still behaved the same as 10.3, except instead of lifting the machine about an edge on the far side, they lifted the machine about an edge on the near side to the motors. A simple reversal, akin to the behavior of the gyro in Professor Laithwaite's experiment above.<br />
<br />
I realized then that I had not understood the professors experiment properly and that if I had, I could have foreseen this third alternative.<br />
<br />
Oh well! We live and learn.<br />
<br />
I do have however another question now, one I have yet to test.<br />
<br />
Question C) So far, we've synchronized the rotation rate of the subassemblies, and the time period of the sinusoidal torque applied to the cage. That is, in expt 10.3, both the subassemblies rotated at 1 revolution per 3 seconds as well, the time period of the sinusoidal torque applied on the cage had a time period of 3 seconds (remember that we applied 14 strokes of 3 seconds each).<br />
<br />
In expt 10.4, we upped the speed of the subassemblies to 1 revolution for every 1.5 seconds and also adjusted the time period of the sinusoidal torque applied on the cage to 1.5 seconds.<br />
<br />
What would happen if we changed that ratio? What would happen if for example, we rotated the subassemblies at 1 revolution per 3 seconds, but the cage itself was pushed around with a sinusoidal torque of time period 1.5 seconds? Further what would happen if we made that sinusoidal torque so that we switched its direction from clockwise to counterclockwise every 1.5 seconds?<br />
<br />
My analysis says that this might force the spinning wheels to either switch the lifting from the far edge to the near edge as the direction of the sinusoidal torque changes. And if we synchronize this with the overal rotation rate of the cage, can we not make it so that the wheels always the machine about one side of the machine? So that way, instead of the whole machine see-sawing back and forth, would it not experience one consistent lift about one side of the machine???<br />
<br />
I feel that my expectation might again be based on some flaw somewhere in my logic. That last experiment has made me more cautious. However, I can see past this proposition right now, so I am going to try that out next.<br />
<br />
<br />
Note: You will notice that inspite of the addition of the capacitors, the two subassemblies do infact still defy the command to rotate at 1.5 seconds per revolution when their motors are initially engaged. This seems to be because they are encountering a very large load, much large than even the torque of the entire machine about its bottom edge. B.L. and I are currently trying to calculate the load coming on the wheels quantitatively. I will present the results of that as well, soon. There seems to be more than meets the eye there, however you will note that once the subassemblies start rotating at 1.5 seconds per revolution, they do not have any problem sustaining that rotation, unlike in 10.3, where they repeatedly stalled even during the experiment. It seems the start up load is amazingly high, atleast a 100 times what we expected. Curious!!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>

<span style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNad7w-aUvs">జయ్ శ్రీ రామ్!</a></span></div>
<br />
Troubleshooting electrical issues is often a tricky art rather than an exact science. Not only in experiments 10.2 and 10.3, but also others not posted on the blog, I noticed a certain condition coming up repeatedly. After careful thought, I became convinced that this condition is not inherent to the properties I'm measuring but rather an issue of a mismatch between the power supply and the motor load for the two motors powering the wheel sub-assemblies.<br />
<br />
Refer to Experiment 10.3<br />
Time Index 00:20 seconds ~ 00:26 seconds<br />
Time Index 00:50 seconds ~ 01:10 seconds<br />
for examples of the behavior.<br />
<br />
During these periods, the rotation of the wheel sub-assemblies becomes frozen (even though the motors have been commanded to rotate the sub-assemblies at a uniform speed of 1 revolution per 3 seconds) or move very very slowly.<br />
<br />
Subsequent experiments to measure the voltage across the motors during such periods revealed that the voltage had fallen to less than 5 Volts in the motors even though the power sources, the motors and the circuits were all in good order.<br />
<br />
Careful tests confirmed that there was nothing wrong with the power sources. They could supply in excess of 60 volts no problem. It was a mystery why the motors were not pulling the current they needed from the active power sources and rotating at the commanded rate.<br />
<br />
Further I found that during these time periods, when I leaned over and pushed the cage with just my little finger, the input voltage would shoot up past 50 Volts in a flash. At other times, if I didn't do anything to disturb it, the cage would stay frozen for a random amount of time before returning to operating at the commanded rate.<br />
<br />
This confirmed my suspicions. My theory took firm shape after consultations with B.L. (Thank you B.L.)!!!<br />
<br />
It seems the motors are encountering a very heavy load during periods of increasing or decreasing current. So much so that the current/voltage demand is exceeding what the power supply can put out, (which is considerable) and are tripping the over-voltage protection circuits of the power sources, resetting the voltage to a trivial value.<br />
<br />
The above picture shows the two rather large, powerful 22,000 micro Farad capacitors I have now wired in parallel to the motor load, at the power source terminals. The capacitors act as reservoirs of electrical energy, supplying it to the motors during crucial phases, when the load spikes and 'refilling' during periods of low load.<br />
<br />
We are now set to resume testing again!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
There are three experiments presented here. The technical settings of the experiments are displayed at the beginning of the experiments, in the videos.<br />
<br />
1) Experiment 10.2: We apply sinusoidal torque at 1 Ampere for a few cycles, and then 2 Amperes for most of the 'active' part of the experiment i.e. that part of the experiment where all three sets of motors are working - the wheels are spinning, the subassembly is spinning and the main motor is spinning the cage.<br />
<br />
2) Experiment 10.3: We apply sinusoidal torque first at 3 Amperes, then at 4 Amperes and then at 5 Amperes and then finally at 6 Amperes.<br />
<br />
3) Experiment 10.4: We apply sinusoidal torque at 1 Ampere and then for 2 Amperes, keeping the wheels at 0 RPM.<br />
<br />
The important purpose of Experiment 10.4 is to demonstrate that the cage undergoes ever increasing, gradual increase in rotational speed, making the experiment unsafe after a certain point.<br />
<br />
Remember, that is just at 2 Amps for a few seconds. We see that in Experiment 10.3, we are able to apply up to 6 Amperes (fully 300% more), and not run the danger of uncontrolled acceleration! The reason is, I believe, that spinning wheels have this inductive ability to store and manipulate a lot of energy. In fact, they must be able to do more than that. The spinning wheels in the prototype set up are somehow able to expel energy from the cage (or armature). There might be a connection between this energy expulsion process and the 'pitching' or 'elementary flying action' that the machine frame experiences with increasing intensity as we increase the max. torque of the main motor.<br />
<br />
Note also that the entire frame is increasingly 'dynamic' as we increase the max torque. <br />
<br />
I am considering continuing the experiments with higher and higher torques in the next week. Note also that the machine continues to spin around for a few rounds even after the sinusoidal pulses cease. This seems to indicate that the machine is operating in a 'free' state, rather than a 'forced' once that ceases as soon as the input ceases.<br />

<br />
Clarification regarding my previous post, Experiment 10.1 : During the last few seconds of Experiment 10.1, the prototype (The one with the red tape on its back, to be precise) suffered a partial power outage. So if you look at Experiment 10.1 closely, you will notice that one of the wheel sub-assemblies stops spinning.<br />
<br />
This of course renders the 'usable' portion of experiment 10.1 very short (the part where all the three sets of motors are on, the wheel motors, the sub-assembly motors and the main motor.) however, with these new experiments, we have more exposure to that crucial combination of conditions.</div>
